Eye Exam Image

At Prather Family Eyecare, we strive to provide comprehensive eye care for the whole family. Regular, preventative check-ups are important to maintaining good eye health, even if you feel you are seeing well.  Often, eye and vision problems do not have obvious symptoms or signs, but are easily diagnosed with a thorough examination.  By diagnosing eye and vision conditions early on, we can provide treatment options and potentially restore or prevent vision loss.  Dr. Prather strongly recommends an annual eye examination.

Health History and Consultation

During an eye exam, Dr. Prather and staff will ask you questions about any symptoms or issues you are experiencing, medications your are currently taking, any blurry vision, your work environment, and your overall health. Family history and previous eye or vision conditions will also be discussed during this part of the examination. Dr. Prather will consider this information when determining any treatments or recommendations.

Visual Acuity Testing and Refraction

Regular visual acuity evaluations ensure that you always have the clearest vision possible.  Visual acuity testing is the part of our comprehensive eye exam where we measure how each eye is seeing by using a wall eye chart and a reading eye chart.  The results of these tests are portrayed as a fraction, with 20/20 being the standard for normal distance and reading vision.  The refraction is the test that determines your eyeglass prescription.  A refraction may be performed by either the doctor or a technician, and typically involves questioning along the lines of, "which is better, 1 or 2?"  Depending on the results of your visual acuity test and refraction, Dr. Prather may prescribe corrective glasses, contact lenses, or even referral for surgical correction.

Eye Function Testing

In addition to vision testing, an eye exam at Prather Family Eyecare includes testing eye functionality. Our staff performs several tests to evaluate depth perception, color vision, eye muscle capabilities, peripheral vision, and responsiveness to light. Several other simple tests are completed to determine whether the eyes are focusing, moving, and working together properly. The test results enable Dr. Prather to diagnose any underlying conditions that may be impairing the eyes ability to focus or work together.

Eye Health

As part of a comprehensive eye exam, Dr. Prather evaluates the overall eye health by visually inspecting the anatomical structures in and around the patient's eyes.  Modern ophthalmoscopes and diagnostic imaging systems make this more feasible and thorough than ever.  To examine the internal structures of the eye, we may need to dilate the pupils.  With dilation, drops are placed in the eyes to widen, or dilate, the pupils, and a special magnifying lens is used to examine the retina for signs of disease.  Intraocular pressure is obtained through a method called tonometry.  Increased eye pressure may be an indicator of glaucoma, so we routinely utilize tonometry.  After completing these short tests, Dr. Prather reviews the results and discusses any required treatments with you.
